Governmental Liability Litigation

Over the past twenty years, Page Perry partner Craig T. Jones has developed a niche practice in the area of governmental liability. While the expression “you can’t sue City Hall” is often true, there are certain activities for which local, state and even the federal government can be held liable if they cause significant damage or injury to an individual or business. Here are some of the areas in which Mr. Jones has litigated governmental liability issues:

  • Negligence and nuisance actions against local governments
  • Constitutional rights litigation against state and local officials
  • Police misconduct litigation against state and local law enforcement
  • Neglect and abuse of jail and prison inmates
  • Sexual harassment and abuse of students
  • Damages for death and injury under the state and federal tort claims acts
  • Defective road design cases
  • Wrongful death litigation against military contractors
  • Violation of individual privacy rights by federal officials

Jones’s governmental liability practice has included two arguments in the the United States Supreme Court, which is a rare accomplishment for any lawyer because the Supreme Court only accepts 1 in 100 of the cases brought before it. Jones has also argued such cases in the federal Courts of Appeals, the federal District Courts of several states, and in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals for the State of Georgia.
